Kabuki Transformers on Maneuvers, 1994 - 95

A large, multilayered, colorful work blending Japanese culture and history with high tech imagery. The aircraft carrier’s runway and elevators echo the Kabuki stage. The Transformer toy shapes were inspired by Kabuki costumes and samurai armor, with their militaristic design and camouflage. The carrier’s deck creates a stage/war duality; “dazzle” hull paint recalls WWI–II submarine deception and mirrors Kabuki kimono patterns. These robots could serve both theater and military. The base’s symbol stylizes a samurai war fan.
